KTUN Prepares to Collaborate with AFAD Against Disasters and Risks

AFAD Konya Provincial Director Ali İhsan Körpeş and his delegation met with the Director of the Sinkhole Application Research Center, Prof. Dr. Fetullah Arık, and our Rector, Prof. Dr. Osman Nuri Çelik, to discuss the necessary steps for building a “Disaster Resilient Society,” “Disaster Resilient Cities,” and a “Disaster Resilient Turkey.”

 

During the meeting held at the Rectorate office, discussions were conducted on the necessary steps for achieving a Disaster Resilient Society, Disaster Resilient Cities, and a Disaster Resilient Turkey, focusing on the sinkhole formations that have become increasingly dangerous in recent years in the Konya Closed Basin, encompassing Konya, Karaman, and Aksaray provinces.

 

The meeting also focused on the project titled “Preparation of Sinkhole Susceptibility, Hazard, and Risk Maps for Konya, Karaman, and Aksaray Provinces,” conducted by the Ministry of Interior Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), General Directorate of Earthquake and Risk Reduction, Department of Disaster Risk Reduction and Prevention, and Konya Provincial Directorate of Disaster. Evaluations were made regarding the preparation of a Sinkhole Hazard and Risk Map for Konya Province and Sinkhole Susceptibility, Hazard, and Risk Maps for Karaman and Aksaray Provinces.

 

At the end of the meeting, it was decided that the technical and scientific aspects of the project to be led by AFAD, would be conducted by the Sinkhole Application Research Center and the faculty members of the Geological Engineering Department at our university, with the aim of strengthening the ongoing collaboration.
