Prof. Dr. Murat Ceylan, Faculty Member of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of our University, won the grand prize in the category of "Artificial Intelligence Applications in Sports" within the scope of TUBITAK Entrepreneurship Support Program (BİGG) by making the top 5 among 67 applicants.
The ceremony ,which was held in Istanbul, where projects submitted for the purpose of generating new knowledge in sports and sports-related fields, developing innovative approaches, supporting technological entrepreneurship, and raising awareness in the field of sports technologies were awarded. Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak and TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal attended the ceremony.
Prof. Dr. Murat Ceylan, who participated in the competition in the category of artificial intelligence applications in sports and won the grand prize, developed a system that analyzes the images of athletes taken with a thermal camera before and after training with the project named "ai4sports" and predicts the risk of injury specific to athletes for 40 different muscle groups. With this project, it aims to reduce the risk of injury by continuously monitoring athletes.
67 technological initiative applications were made and 15 of them made it to the final stage. The competition consisted of 7 categories in total: "Augmented and virtual reality applications in sports technologies", "Artificial intelligence applications in sports", "Sports-related statistics and big data analysis applications", "Individual and team tracking-analysis systems", "Training technologies in sports", "Localization of imported sports equipment" and "Sensor technology in sports".
